The .MOBI extension was approved by ICANN on July 11, 2005 and is now administered by the global TLD registry. This domain extension was originally financially supported and sponsored by Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Ericsson, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Telefónica Móviles, Telecom Italia Mobile, Orascom Telecom, the GSM Association, Hutchison Whampoa, Syniverse Technologies and Visa. Each of these international companies is a member of the Board of Directors of .MOBI TLD. In February 2010, Afilias, Ireland, acquired responsibility as the registry. Since March 2017 .mobi has been recognized as a generic top-level domain, with the same conditions as all other gTLDs.
The founding members of dotMobi - including Google, Vodafone, Microsoft and Nokia - have announced that they will continue to support the top-level domain.
